Upcoming Talks

Sunday 14 May (Note the Change of Date due to Victoria Day)

“What is Happening to our Birds? - What we have learned from the Maritime Breeding Bird Atlas” presented by Chris Field PhD.  From 2006-2010, over 1000 volunteer birders across the Maritime Provinces worked on updating the Maritime Breeding Bird Atlas.  Dr. Field gathered information in the Aspotogan, Chester and New Ross areas. In this talk, he will give the results for a number of common and rare species which occur in south coastal Nova Scotia, will compare the results to the earlier atlas to note differences, and will discuss the major changes and their probable causes.

Sunday 18 June

"History Before Writing" presented by Jack Mitchell. Hip-hop or Rap and Slam Poetry have deep roots in the ancient oral form of storytelling - the passing down of myths, legends and history through the spoken word. Dr. Mitchell has created a unique Canadian epic in the Homeric style, about the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (1759), that allows an audience to experience - in modern English - the telling of the story of the battle as it would have been done in the ancient world. In this presentation, he will speak about oral history tradition and its application today, then introduce his own epic poem and perform it - a truly unique experience.

Sunday 17 September

100th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge presented by Dan Conlin

Sunday 15 October

Forestry and Natural History presented by David Patriquin

Sunday 19 November

100th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion and the Commemorative Quilt presented by Laurie Swim

All talks are held at Ocean Swells Community Centre in Northwest Cove, starting at 2.30pm.
